HP, as one of the first companies in Silicon Valley, and the largest company with revenues of $100 billion+, provides ample scope fro career growth across different verticals. You can find experts in virtually every area of computer software/hardware: Technical, research, managerial, project management, marketing, to the entire product planning and release cycle. You can choose to enjoy to learn in the area that you're most interested in. Therefore, I think it is a good place to start for young engineers who have no decided what field to specialize in.
HP has a conducive environment. The intra and inter-team communication is very harmonious. I didn't see much conflict during my time in HP.
Having that said, it could also imply a potential disadvantage of working at a big corporate environment. The pressure is minimal, and people just don't have that aggressive, go-getter mentality you see in smaller companies or startups. To those who have family commitments, HP is great. For young men/women, it really depends on what type of work life you're looking for.
