Lots of unpaid overtime

IBM is absolutely amazing with its average quality of employee, given the sheer size of it (390,000 employees worldwide). The talent here, both engineering and managerial, are top-notch. Since the start of the last century, IBM has re-invented itself several times to adapt to the changing business and technical environment. And there's a great deal to learn from this adaptability.

However, workload is surprisingly overwhelming, given that there're so many employees sharing the work. The sheer size of IBM sometimes gives us the ability to achieve the impossible, but at times its a drag to our productivity. Even worse, most of the extra hours that we work are not compensated in any meaningful ways. Bonuses are horrible, both in industry standard and in absolute terms (meaning 0-2%). Often the managers are not on site, making it hard to address these issues.

Hm Interesting.

I think one of the reasons that motivate people to work longer is their free dinners. People tend to eat there and get back to work for another hour or two. It's one of the best investment they've ever made. ;)

It's interesting that you're looking for the traveling, which is the most dreadful part for the consultants.

Wonder what's the compensation/bonus like on the consulting side?

what was the team that you worked for? Can you get down to the specifics?

That is a LOT of perks. There's this big difference in culture between the new generation silicon valley companies and the old school tech companies from the rest of the country (e.g. IBM). They have lots of perks and tend to be more engineering driven.
