A uptight culture compared to other tech companies

"Don't hate the job but don't love it"
Microsoft has had a very tense, serious culture since its founding. When I say uptight, I don't mean that you have to wear a shirt to go to work. The developers usually just wear jeans, shirts and sneakers to work. But the managers are the no-nonsense types. They hold meetings and make sure that you know what you're talking about. It's not rare that they yell at you if they ask you questions and you don't know the answers. I'm relatively new here, but heard that it's the management style of Gates and Ballmer, and the middle managers pretty much have inherited that. My team doesn't get together often, though we have office parties occasionally. Heard that things look a bit different in other sites, such as the Silicon Valley office. Would like to hear somebody there speak.

totally agree. MSFT is pretty uptight, yet it's what drive you to work hard and turn in good work.

Even Google is the dream work place for engineers, it's still growing in Microsoft's direction. When a company grows big problems start to arise - personnel, efficiency, business direction, etc. Uptight management is perhaps necessary but as an engineer, I'd enjoy a freer and more relaxing environment.

That sounds like a complete opposite with Yahoo. Yahoo is so laid back that you don't feel much pressure from the managers. Too laid back sometimes.

I worked at Microsoft as an SDE as well and totally agree. The management is quite rigid, political and outright unfriendly. Not the best place for the best brains in industry.
