Lack of infrastructure, but one can learn a lot in this kind of environment

Yahoo / Software Engineer job review

2008 to Present
"Love working here!"
First and foremost, Yahoo is a decent company to work in my personal experience. Google fetish aside and ignore what's running on the news recently, Yahoo has always been profitable, even during the dot-bomb period. Comparing to Google, Yahoo is pretty slow at technical innovations; take a look at maps. This is mainly due to Yahoo's lack of infrastructure in place. As an engineer, I found one's ability to multi-task is key to a successful career here at Yahoo; my personal experience told me just that. In the morning when I get to work, many times I would be determined to make the final push and finish my current project at hand, but I always found myself meandering somewhere else, may it be the bureaucratic process or the lack of it or building something which I thought would have been done at a company the size of Yahoo. If one's willing to take a spin and look at it from another perspective, the lack of infrastructure does present a lot of technical opportunities and challenges. It allows me to sample, build, and try out different technologies; it makes the geek-side of me happy. All in all, Yahoo is still a decent company to work and food, though not free, is still far better than the average.

Did what's happening on the news have any impact on the engineers' morale, in any noticeable way?
