eBay - a company on the way down

eBay / San Jose job review

"Just here for the paycheck"
eBay's work culture is pretty old-fashioned. People are promoted based on who they know, rather than on merit or ability. I found this quite frustrating while working at eBay. If you are young, talented, and ambitious, management will not recognize your potential, and you'll quickly find that you'll be better off at a more innovative and dynamic company.

When you say people are promoted based on who they know, do you have any examples on that? Also, do you think the step-down of Meg Whitman would change anything?

I was originally an engineer at PayPal and was present when eBay acquired us and integrated us into their much larger company. The engineers at PayPal were particularly dismayed with eBay's choice for PayPal's new CTO (he replaced PayPal's original CTO after he left following the acquisition). This new CTO forced the engineering organization to migrate to a different source revision control system not because it was better, but because he had business ties with the company who made those tools. It was a pretty disastrous migration. The CTO also brought in external consultants to help us improve the performance of the website. These consultants never gained the technical respect of PayPal's engineers, and we later found out that they were only hired because the new CTO knew them personally from a previous business relationship.
